Video: IT in policing - Be brave and accept risk

25/10/16

David Pryde, assistant chief constable of Hampshire Police and national lead for disclosure and PNC portfolios

It’s no secret that not all investment in technology in British law enforcement has been a success. A new approach is called for, argues Pryde – one based on a changed mindset, where there is more tolerance for a chance of failure.

“You’re just not going to succeed in innovating unless you accept you might fail,” he says.

Police culture has not caught up with commercial experience, where experimentation and a willingness to try new approaches but move on where things do not work out is the norm. “We need to challenge a few sacred cows and think differently to make progress here,” he says.

Supported by Microsoft, UKAuthority and research participants from police, government and associated bodies, published a white paper, 'Digitising Policing'.
