EDPS says survey shows institutions are doing well in complying with data protection rules

EU institutions are doing a generally good job in complying with data protection rules, according to a new report from the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS).

It has come to the conclusion after a survey of the relevant bodies showed that a large majority keep an inventory and register of data, and that the notification rates for prior checks and access have generally increased.

While the notifications have declined in some areas, the report says this often reflects the development of new processing operations when it is difficult to achieve a rate close to 100%.

The EDPS said the survey showed a steady improvement compared with the previous exercise two years ago.

EDPS Giovanni Buttarelli said: "Our latest stock-taking exercise confirms a largely positive trend among EU institutions and bodies.

“As their independent supervisory authority, it is the role of the EDPS to make sure they remain accountable in their compliance with data protection rules. The publication of this report will help us to establish priorities for EDPS activities in 2018, a year which, with the entry into force of the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), as well as a proposal to amend the current rules governing data protection in the EU institutions, will mark the beginning of a new era in data protection.”

The report adds that EU institutions now need to focus on maintaining proper inventories, as those that keep them complete and up-to-date will find it easier to comply with new data rules. It adds that the EDPS will provide support where necessary.
