The Cabinet Office has announced that the UK Government has exceeded its target for the recruitment into the Civil Service Fast Stream of people with science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) qualifications.

It said that in May of last year it set an ambition of at least 50% of Fast Stream recruits have a STEM degree, and that new analysis shows this has been passed after this year’s recruitment campaign.

It added that this will bring fresh perspectives drawing on a knowledge of science and technology to policy making.

The ambition for STEM graduates to account for 50% of Fast Stream recruits will remain in place for the 2024 intake.

Minister for the Cabinet Office Jeremy Quin said: “We’re taking long term decisions that will put innovation at the very core of policy making – attracting the best scientists, engineers, technologists and mathematicians from across the UK into the heart of Government.

“Today's announcement that we have exceeded our STEM recruitment ambition is an important step forward in building a modern civil service which can deliver more efficient services for the British public.”
