West Berkshire Council has set up a new online registration scheme for household waste recycling centres, replacing paper permits with a digital system.

It said this will enable households to register and update their vehicle details, household addresses and contact details to obtain easy entry into the centres, as long as they have booked an appointment.

They will be able to register up to three cars per household for digital permits. The councils said that once a car has been registered the permit will normally become live instantly and its status will show in the resident’s My account.

Digital permit applications for commercial vehicles will take up to 15 days to be assessed and processed.

Staff will be alerted to any unregistered vehicles entering the recycling centres through ANPR cameras.

The council said the new service will save it from printing over 65,000 paper permits to replace those that have expired or are close to doing so.

Easier process

Councillor Steve Ardagh-Walter, executive member for the environment at West Berkshire Council, said: "We understand how important our recycling centres are to the community and being accessible to residents. We want to make the process of visiting the sites easier, to ensure everyone can recycle more and dispose of their waste properly.

"Alongside the success of the booking system introduced in May 2020, I am pleased we can introduce a digital permit registration scheme to improve site visits and reduce our own impact on the environment by using less printed paper, whilst making it a better experience for our residents."
