The UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) has launched the Seabed Mapping App as part of its Seabed Mapping Services.
It has been made available via the Admiralty Marine Data Portal, and provides access to extensive UK bathymetry holdings held within UKHO’s Marine Environmental Data and Information Network (MEDIN) accredited National Data Archive, along with download bathymetry data which is freely available under the UKHO Bathymetry Data Licence (similar to the Open Government Licence).
It includes bathymetry and seabed profiles, seabed geology and seabed samples and pipelines, cables and subsea infrastructure.
UKOH said the data has been compiled in collaboration with expert providers, government organisations, hydrographic offices and other partners around the world.
The app has been developed to make marine environmental datasets more available and accessible.
New features from beta
A beta version was launched two years ago, following which there have been improvements to the interface and the addition of new services. These include web map tiles to provide context and help users identify the datasets they want to download.
In addition, new filtering tools using different criteria – such as the survey capturing date and data resolution – have been added.
There has also been a data cleansing exercise and the application of the latest MEDIN Discovery Metadata Standard.
The service supports the GEBCO Seabed 2030 project and the launch of upcoming UKHO-led projects in this space.
