Work has been completed on a rural full fibre network for Renfrewshire.

The project, focused on providing connectivity for businesses in rural towns and villages, was carried out under a £15 million Connectivity as a Service contract between Renfrewshire Council and network providers Commsworld and CityFibre.

Under this part of the deal, Commsworld has provided 32km of connections to Inchinnan, Erskine, Bishopton, Houston, Bridge of Weir and Kilbarchan in just over four months.

It has given businesses in the county access to the company’s optical core network.

Councillor John Shaw, convener of Renfrewshire Council’s finance, resources and customer services policy board, said: “This is excellent news for local businesses in our rural towns and villages. The coronavirus pandemic has underlined the critical importance of connectivity to our business community as shops adapt to sell their products online and companies rely on better bandwidth to communicate with suppliers, staff and customers.

“The council’s ground breaking connectivity-as-a-service contract with Commsworld ensures sustained investment in our digital infrastructure over the coming years, and work is well underway on developing a future proofed 130km full fibre network, greatly improving connectivity at local schools, nurseries, libraries, town halls, community centres and care homes.”
