Company to work with National Cyber Crime Unit on consolidating data from existing platforms
The National Crime Agency (NCA) has signed technology consultancy BMT to work with it on the development of a cyber data platform to support its National Cyber Crime Unit (NCCU).
The project will involve the NCCU and BMT pulling together data from several platforms and combine its analysis tools to obtain insights on cyber threats and provide a quick response.
BMT claimed expertise in the key technologies required for the platform, including search, graph databases, entity extraction techniques and relationship analysis.
Paul Edmunds from the NCA’s National Cyber Crime Unit said: “Working in collaboration with BMT allows us to benefit from the expertise they have to offer and build sophisticated data capabilities more quickly. I have no doubt that this collaboration will have a direct impact on our cyber capabilities and how we tackle serious cyber crime going forward.”
The NCCU developed a minimum viable product for the platform in the alpha phase of the project early last year. The brought together a small number of data sources in a centralised repository and made it possible to run ‘at speed’ analysis.
The unit has been in operation since 2013 and works closely with regional organised crime units, the Metropolitan Police Cyber Crime Unit and others to detect and respond to threats. It is funded by the Government under the National Cyber Security Programme.
