Education Scotland has agreed on a digital transformation partnership with public services software specialist Civica.

The agency and the company signed a contract in July that will run for up to three years if both extension options are taken up.

They will work together on creating new digital tools and services for Scotland’s schools and to develop new approaches to its work, taking in school inspections, professional learning for teachers and practitioners, and employability and skills training.

It follows a discovery phase and a process to pass the Digital First Standard gateway that Education Scotland carried out remotely.

The agency said the first project is focused on moving all the agency’s professional learning offerings onto one integrated database.

The partnership also includes the provision of an innovation fund through which Education Scotland will work with Civica’s NorthStar lab to support initiatives such as the development of prototype apps and testing digital theories for new approaches to education.

Aim for transformation

Gayle Gorman, chief inspector schools and chief executive of Education Scotland, said: “This programme aims to transform how Education Scotland performs its role as the national agency for educational improvement.

“It is great to have Civica on board to assist with the technical delivery of our digital transformation programme. We look forward to developing this offer; and to continuing to support and work with teachers and practitioners across Scotland.”
