East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust has taken two significant steps in the implementation of electronic patient records (EPRs).

It has announced a plan for a new EPR for the maternity unit at Lister Hospital based on the My Pregnancy Notes service, and become the first trust in the UK to choose the ORBIS U EPR from Dedalus.

The trust said the maternity EPR will be available from the moment a woman presents to maternity care through pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period.

It will enable conversations and updates between clinicians and service users, enable parents to access information in near real time, and could include details on a person’s medical, pregnancy and obstetric history as well as any current risk factors.

The My Pregnancy Notes website will also give users access to information in their record and allow them to contribute to a personalised care plan.

Huge difference

Amanda Rowley, director of midwifery at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, said: “The My Pregnancy Notes website will make a huge difference. We’ve worked closely with our Lister Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnership to ensure the feedback from our women and service users is listened to, creating positive, long lasting change.

“The website means we can involve our women and service users in every aspect of their care, from the very start of their pregnancy journey – reassuring them with full access to notes, collaborative care planning and extensive remote monitoring. We are really excited to introduce My Pregnancy Notes later this year.”

ORBIS said its EPR will support the digitisation of patient information including medical history, diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, allergies, radiology images and laboratory test results across the trust’s four hospitals.

Mark Stanton, chief information officer at the trust, said: “Deploying ORBIS U as our EPR is a major undertaking for the trust and a key component of our digital transformation.

“We chose to stay with Dedalus as ORBIS U is a significant upgrade on our existing EPR solution and can be adapted to our needs.”
