September launch planned for new online barring referral system with more to follow next year
The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) has announced plans for a new barring referral system as one of a number of digital services scheduled for launch in the next few months.
DBS said the new system will become available early next month and enable employers to submit barring referrals – expressions of concern about someone harming a child or vulnerable adult – online. They will be able to create an account, manage the referrals and share information through a secure platform with the DBS.
People who have been referred to the organisation will also be able to set up an account to communicate with it confidentially.
Early next year it will become possible to apply online for a basic criminal record check, which includes any unspent convictions. DBS said the process will involve using the GOV.UK Verify service to prove identity.
This will be followed by the introduction of online standard and enhanced checks for employers and organisations – the process for checking suitability for employment in roles working with children and vulnerable adults. They will be able to create an online account, manage and track the progress of DBS applications online.
