Innovate UK launches cyber security competition

National innovation agency Innovate UK has announced a £500,000 competition for ideas to protect information systems, data and services from unauthorised access or accidental harm. It will be open to anyone based in a UK academic institution and involves three aims: to develop our cyberspace, deter adversaries and develop capabilities.

The organisation said entrants must have a clear intention to commercialise their idea and the support of the relevant institution. The successful applicants will win grants of up to £16,000 and take part in a six-week programme supported by industry experts.

Entrust, a joint venture partnership between Staffordshire County Council and Capita, has appointed Chris Blackwell as its new chief executive. He has previously worked in a series of senior leadership roles include managing director for Maximus and chief executive of the Reducing Reoffending Partnership.

The organisation works across the UK in partnership with schools, academy trusts and local authorities on learning technologies and school improvements.

Probate Service extends online application options

The Probate Service has set up an online form to deal with a broader range of applications for probate than previously.

It includes a new statement of truth for declarations that the information provided is correct, removing the need to swear an oath in person. There is also a function to pay the fee online, and a ‘save and return’ feature to make it possible to revisit a part-finished application.

The new service is available for applicants meeting one of three criteria: only one executor is applying; there is an original will available even if the person who died made up to four changes; and the person who died classed England or Wales as their permanent home.

Online applications will be extended for solicitors and other professionals in the spring of this year.
