DfE builds schools data register
The Department for Education has joined the move to develop an ecosystem of data registers in central government with the building of a schools register.
It has so far taken the project to its alpha phase, with an official focus on school data from Hertfordshire, and is now looking for feedback to take into account in further development.
The project, supported by the data group in the Government Digital Service and outlined on a Government data blog, contributes to the move to create a number of data registers, providing a single source of names and titles for use throughout government, as part of the building of a national data infrastructure. It follows a proposal from the Data Leaders Network that education should be included in the first tranche of registers.
The blog says the move will contribute to reducing duplication, with upkeep of the register being in the hands of a custodian in the DfE, and promoting the re-use of authoritative data.
LocalGov Digital works on case management
LocalGov Digital has launched a project to look at creating a case management capability for councils. The organisation, which provides a network for digital practitioners in local government, said it reflects a desire by some councils to move away from using CRM systems towards a smaller, more versatile capability.
It is working with local authorities including Leeds and West Berkshire on a discovery phase, along with crowdfunding organisation CC2i.
West Yorkshire gets interactive cycling map
A group of local authorities in West Yorkshire have developed a digital cycle map for the region, providing cyclists with details of routes, tracks and paths. Features include a zoom in and out facility, links to schools, cycle shops and community bike hubs websites, locations for cycle parking and Toucan style crossing points.
The councils involved are Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield, and they have been working with cycling guide provider Four Point Mapping.
