David Pryde, assistant chief constable of Hampshire Police and national lead for disclosure and PNC portfolios

Each year, the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) receives about 4 million applications, of which 2 million are passed on to the 43 police forces in England and Wales for further scrutiny. Currently, 11,000 result in a police response.

For Pryde, this indicates a large amount of work is going on that could be sped up and automated, saving budget and time, with better use of technology; while a move to more federated and regional system hubs could also clearly improve the process.

“We’re doing the same work multiple times here, work that can and should be better done by IT,” he points out.
