New service is aimed at minimising any mistakes

HM Revenue & Customs has opened an online service for charities to register their details for tax purposes.

The department said the service includes in-built checks and guidance to ensure organisations provide the right information and documentation.

HMRC's chief digital and information officer, Mark Dearnley, said: "We are completely changing the way we work with our customers - including charities. Our new digital services are straightforward, easy to use and convenient.

"The charities service minimises the risk of making mistakes so applications are less likely to be returned to the organisation."

The move is the latest in HMRC's programme to simplify tax services. Among its other plans for this year are to make it possible for small and medium enterprises to access all they need from a personalised home page with secure digital messaging, that taxpayers on self-assessment can conduct all transactions online, and people on PAYE can alert the department to any relevant changes.
