The Police Digital Service’s National Management Centre (NMC) has been awarded a National Cybercrime Programme Chief Superintendent’s Commendation for its role in protecting UK law enforcement against cyber threats.

The award was presented at the annual National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) National Cybercrime Programme, Commissioners, and Chief Superintendents’ Awards.

Operating since 2019, the NMC provides 24/7 support to 42 UK police forces and national functions.

PDS said that over the past 12 months the NMC has analysed 158,499 cyber security alerts, and led on 20 national cyber incidents impacting UK policing, from third party data breaches to potential attacks on key UK events such as Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool.

It also shared 2,795 actionable cyber threat intelligence alerts with police forces, giving advice and guidance to remediate threats before they happened. More than 1,100 of these alerts were high priority that forces needed to action immediately to protect UK policing from cyber threat.

It has now expanded its offering with an enhanced monitoring service, providing 24/7 support for major national and international events.

Testament to dedication

Stephen Reid, director of NMC, said: "This commendation is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the entire team at the National Management Centre. We are honoured to be recognised by the NPCC for our contributions to tackling cyber crime and ensuring the security of our digital landscape."

Ian Bell, CEO of PDS, added: "Collaboration is key in the fight against cyber threats, and the National Management Centre exemplifies this ethos. This commendation is well deserved and reflects the centre's pivotal role in maintaining the resilience of our national cyber security infrastructure."
