CityNext is a vision offering local services a framework, guidance and ideas to help them innovate from the ground up to build smart places and connected communities, says Ellen Wilson, CityNext lead at Microsoft. Standards, interoperability and passionate people are key to delivering the vision, she adds, suggesting that services focus on technologies ‘that are already out there’, commodity solutions and cloud allow them to dip in and out, to trial innovation in a rapid timescale and at minimal risk.
Focus on the future, says Wilson, and ensure that the choices you make today don’t lock you out of the technology developments in the future. Where you start on this journey doesn’t matter – it depends on the individual local service or place. As long as you get the foundations right and use a modular approach based on standards you can build towards smart places and connected communities.
