LocalGov Digital considers change to co-operative

Practitioners’ group aims for more formal status as a platform to attract funding

LocalGov Digital has begun a consultation among its members on a proposal to become a community co-operative.

The organisation of local government digital specialists has said it wants to move beyond being an informal volunteer network to a membership body run on financial donations.

It said the move is needed to promote further growth and work more effectively with partner organisations.

The plan is to make it a community co-operative by the first quarter of 2017 with a minimal financial payment from members.

“Moving to a co-operative membership model will give us the framework to be clear about who we are and what we want to achieve,” it says on its website. “It also provides opportunities for the network to potentially seek funding.

“The most important thing for us is that we are essentially asking people to sign up to the principles and values of the cooperative as part of joining and becoming a part of LocalGov Digital.”

The organisation has been active in the development and promotion of the Local Government Digital Service Standards, drawing them up with the support of the Government Digital Service and setting up regional peer groups to support their evolution.

It has also developed its Unmentoring networking programme and created the Pipeline service, currently in alpha phase, for publishing details of digital projects and concepts.
