Single councils could save £400,000 a year by using data standards for waste services 

The re-usable data standards that Local Digital has developed with local authorities to improve the efficiency of waste services could save the average council (of 68,000 households) up to £400,000 annually.

How? With an Application Programme Interface in place to allow digital self service and systems to 'talk to each other', the standards remove inefficiency and 'avoidable costs' at every stage, from managing suppliers to customer contact.

More broadly, applying data standards to other local government services could amount to savings "in the billions" says Sarah Prag, Service Design Consultant for the Local Digital Waste Service Standards Project.
