A free event hosted by the Local Digital Campaign is inviting anyone who works in the public sector to learn more about work of the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) to improve digital inclusion and to discuss best practice with the country's digital inclusion leaders.
The announcement of the event follows the launch today of Government's digital inclusion strategy which aims to reduce the offline population by 25% by 2016, which equates to 2.7 million more people becoming competent users of online services.
Led by William Barker, DCLG's Head of Technology and Digital Futures Strategy, 'Digital Inclusion - Policy into Practice' on 29 April will open a discussion around digital inclusion with some of the nation's experts in the field, and offer the chance to get practical advice, hear results from the latest initiatives and access collaboration opportunities.
Speakers include Professor Leela Damodaran, Professor of Digital Inclusion and Participation at Loughborough University and member of the Government Digital Service's Digital Inclusion Stakeholder Panel; and Helen Milner, Chief Executive of the Tinder Foundation, the non-profit social enterprise that supports the digital skills of communities nationwide.
The workshop will cover digital inclusion policy making, as well as tools and techniques available to support policy makers and practitioners. Real-life examples of digital inclusion success stories will be presented through three case studies:
- English My Way: supporting integration through English language learning online
- Project Hugo: providing internet services and training to social housing tenants
- Lewisham Council's Universal Credit Pilot: helping unemployed people boost their digital skills.
The event includes time for networking, Q&A and time for participants to consider how they might work together to improve digital inclusion at their organisation and with their partners.
